Nokia is a global leader in technologies that connect people and things, with a position of strength in subscriber data management, edge and core routers, and mobile and optical communications. With state-of-the-art software, hardware, and services for all types of networks, Nokia is uniquely positioned to help communication service providers, governments, and large enterprises deliver on the promise of 5G, Cloud, and the Internet of Things. Nokia has invented core technologies that have driven every major stage of telecommunications over the past hundred years, including the transistor, laser, optical fiber, and GSM cellular telephony.
Nokia’s research and innovation arm, Nokia Bell Labs, creates disruptive technologies that shape the way the world communicates and connects.
A significant contribution from Nokia Bell Labs within UNITY-6G will be the enhancement and integration of Wi-Fi capabilities as a complementing technology for 6G. To do so, the team will focus on advancing Wi-Fi performance in terms of reliability and latency, cooperating with IMEC on the development and testing of an innovative time-sensitive solution, and on bringing additional monitoring capabilities and support for ML-based management algorithms that will help to improve the performance of Wi-Fi networks and reduce their energy footprint.
Nokia will also play a crucial role in testing and validating the technologies and solutions developed within the project to ensure that they meet the required performance and reliability standards.
Nokia will also collaborate with other key players in the telecommunications industry, research institutions, and academia, facilitating knowledge exchange and joint development efforts.
Nokia emphasizes energy efficiency and sustainability in its contributions, aligning with UNITY-6G goals to create environmentally friendly network solutions.
UNITY-6G fosters collaboration among various stakeholders, including industry leaders, research institutions, and governments. This collaboration is essential for driving innovation and ensuring that Nokia remains at the forefront of 6G technology development. Moreover, the project emphasizes sustainability in the development of 6G technologies. Nokia’s participation aligns with its commitment to reducing energy consumption and minimizing the environmental impact of its networks. Finally, being part of UNITY-6G enables Nokia to contribute to the establishment of standards and frameworks that will shape the future of 6G networks.
Key driving project members from Bell Labs RSR Germany Wi-Fi team are Gianluca Fontanesi and Lorenzo Galati Giordano.
Gianluca Fontanesi is a Research Engineer at Nokia Bell Labs. His research focuses on innovative techniques and AI/ML based optimizations for reliable low-latency communications in Wi-Fi 7/Wi-Fi 8.
Lorenzo Galati Giordano is a Senior Research Engineer at Nokia Bell Labs since 2015, producing leading research contributions in the area of massive MIMO and radio systems operating in the unlicensed spectrum.
