On August 4, 2025, UNITY-6G Project Coordinator Dr. Engin Zeydan from CTTC co-organized a tutorial titled “Applying Data Engineering and Blockchain for B5G/6G Networks: A Step-by-Step Approach” together with Prof. Madhusanka Liyanage from the University College Dublin, Ireland, during the IEEE Cyber Security & Resilience 2025 conference held in Chania, Crete, Greece.

The aim of the tutorial was to provide a comprehensive and practical overview of the convergence between data engineering and blockchain frameworks, and to demonstrate how these technologies can support the evolution of beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G telecommunication systems.

Some of the key features of this tutorial included:

  • A clear link between data engineering ecosystems (covering data connection, ingestion, processing & analysis, storage, monitoring & visualization, and management & orchestration frameworks) and telecommunication networks.
  • An overview of the role of blockchain and distributed ledger technologies (DLT) in enhancing trust, transparency, and automation within B5G/6G systems.
  • A discussion on how data science frameworks complement data engineering in building secure and intelligent communication infrastructures.
  • Presentation of real-world use cases illustrating how data engineering and blockchain can be jointly applied to modern telecommunication networks.

The tutorial was structured in two main parts. The first part introduced the foundational concepts of data engineering and blockchain technologies, setting the stage for their relevance to emerging telecommunication paradigms. The second part focused on practical applications and demonstrations, offering participants a step-by-step walkthrough of how these technologies can be implemented in B5G/6G use cases.

The tutorial highlighted that the application of data engineering and blockchain in telecommunications is a rapidly emerging area of research and innovation. As telecommunication networks evolve toward B5G and 6G, the importance of these technologies in managing data-driven, intelligent, and resilient systems will continue to grow.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to learn directly from experts in the field about the interplay between data engineering, blockchain, and future network architectures—an area expected to play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of secure and autonomous communication systems.
