UNITY-6G Highlights Semantic Communication for AI-Native Systems at ICT 2026

On May 20–22, 2026, UNITY-6G contributed to the discussions at the 32nd International Conference on Telecommunications (ICT 2026), held in Thessaloniki, Greece. The prominent event, technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society, reunited global researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to exchange knowledge on emerging architectural trends, 6G visions, and intelligent networking.

As 6G research increasingly explores networks capable of understanding context, intent, and service objectives, semantic and goal-oriented communication has emerged as a cornerstone topic for future AI-native systems. UNITY-6G actively drove this conversation forward through its strategic participation in one of the conference’s featured panels dedicated to Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) projects.

On Friday, May 22, 2026, UNITY-6G Scientific Coordinator, Dr. Luis Blanco from CTTC, joined a panel titled “Semantic and Goal-Oriented Communication for 6G: Architectures, Evaluation, and Emerging Applications.” Moderated by Dr. Francesca Costanzo (CEA-Leti), the panel featured distinguished co-panelists Prof. Themistoklis Charalambous (University of Cyprus) and Prof. Riku Jäntti (Aalto University).

The panel examined how semantic and goal-oriented paradigms will shape the evolution of future 6G architectures, focusing specifically on intelligent orchestration, adaptive resource management, and AI-driven network operation. These themes map directly to UNITY-6G’s core vision of creating unified, software-driven, and AI-enabled 6G infrastructures integrated with Open RAN and advanced orchestration frameworks.

By engaging directly with the research community at ICT 2026, UNITY-6G reinforced its commitment to collaborative innovation, helping define the structural benchmarks required to transition from traditional data transmission to intelligent, context-aware information exchange.
